This film was commissioned by curator Jyoti Mistri as part of the collective exhibition Archive as a Place to Play, in the context of Eye Filmmuseum´s Close-Up: A new generation of Film and Video-artists in the Netherlands. Antipodes is a film poem that reflects on the meta-narratives of colonialism through the re-interpretation of early archive footage from Dutch colonies.
Taking as a guiding principle the concept of Antipodes (A diametrically opposed point across the globe. E.g. brazil is the antipode of Phillipines), I opened the reflection towards the links between geography, maps and the notions of otherness. The film incorporates passages from the bible, medieval maps and illustrations, flags and early perspective studies to establish a relationship between gaze, mirrors, geography and colonialism.
